The General quietly walks off the court for the last time

What can you say about Bob Knight that hasn’t already been said? Not much. The guy’s been called every name in the book from a S.O.B. to the G.O.A.T. And they all ring true in their own right. He was a pompous, arrogant, no-nonsense prick when he wanted to be, but there is no denying the longevity or the sustained success he achieved. 902 victories!! All the coach has to say is “scoreboard” when it comes to his legacy. But more importantly, when it comes down to the term “student athlete”, he made it a reality. Say what you will, but he graduated players and that should say as much about the guy as his red face and obscenity laced tirades. Even in retiring, the old ball coach was game planning.

Pat Knight has been the head coach designate since 2005.

“There’s a transition that’s going to take place here from me to Pat and I’ve dwelt on this all year long – about what would be the best way to do this, and how it would be best for him and for the team and for what we can do in the long run to make this the best thing for Texas Tech,” said Knight, who retires with 902 career victories. “I didn’t know, I’ve never really known when I was going to step down from this job. As I thought about it, my first thought was at the end of this season.”

Knight said he spoke with Newell for about an hour and an half Sunday.

“My thinking was that for Pat and for this team – most of which is returning next year – the best thing for the long run for this team would be for Pat and his staff to coach these remaining 10 games,” Knight said. “And (to) get an understanding, get a real feel for each other, be able to think over the course of the spring and summer going into next season about how people had played, how things had been done offensively or defensively, what could be done or couldn’t be done, what to stay away from, what to work on and develop that from a game standpoint as the coach in charge of everything rather than as an assistant coach.

“It was always a problem for me as to just what would be the most effective way in this transition, to make this transition. And with all the thought that I put into it, that’s exactly how I felt that it should be.

But, coach, before you go off into the sunset; can you tell us what the future holds for Bob Knight?

Candace Parker’s dunk gets lost amongst Super Bowl coverage

Candace Parker dunked again on Sunday. We’re figuring this is the first you’ve heard of it because of the incessant Super Bowl coverage that went late into the night after getting rolling when the rooster crowed. So, here’s the latest edition to CP3’s jam collection.

We’re not going to say that was the most graceful dunk of all time, but the girl still has more hops than 7-foot-7 Kenny George.

He’s no Dickie V, but Brucey P is awesome baby!

You don’t have to like the Tennessee Volunteers basketball team, but you gotta love the big man, Bruce Pearl. From his seizure-inducing sportcoats to his sweat-drenched suits to his bodypaint filled masquerade as the letter `V’ to his ability to hug smoking hot babes, Pearl is an all-around fun guy. While we love his antics on the sidelines – and in the stands – Pearl proved he’s got a career lined up after coaching when he helped call the Lady Vols game against Arkansas on Thursday night.

We don’t know about you, but we say he’s a diaper dandy baby!!

Hey, coach Crean, is your refrigerator running?

Those whacky prank callers who struck the ACC women’s basketball teleconference on Tuesday were back at it on Thursday, infiltrating the Big East men’s basketball conference call and asking some dirty, naughty questions.

Good luck getting through the next coach with this,” [Marquette coach Tom] Crean said to associate commissioner John Paquette after his portion of the call.

It got so bad Thursday that Paquette began screening calls, only taking them from writers he was familiar with. He was able to head off most of the prank calls based on the names of fabricated media.

South Florida’s Stan Heath, West Virginia’s Bob Huggins, St. John’s Norm Roberts and UConn’s Jim Calhoun along with Crean were among the coaches asked disgusting questions.

As the hourlong teleconference continued, the prank calls ceased and Providence’s Tim Welsh, Seton Hall’s Bobby Gonzalez and Louisville’s Rick Pitino were spared.

When Paquette introduced Calhoun, the coach was ready to go because he had heard some of the questions to other coaches.

“Thanks for joining us on the call and before we get started we’ve had some prank …,” Paquette said.

“I understand,” Calhoun said.

“I’ve been trying to screen them as best I can,” Paquette said. “So if you could give us a comment on last night’s game [against Cincinnati] and your thoughts on facing Indiana …”

“Yeah, well, as far as the conference call goes I wish some people would get some lives,” Calhoun said.

Lifeless or not, whoever these guys are, they’re pretty brazen. However, we’ve noticed that these wisenheimers haven’t bothered to crank call the Big 12 yet. Any particular reason for that fellas?

IUPUI coach goes shoeless for charity

About the only time Indian University-Purdue University Indianapolis gets any coverage in the mainstream world of sports is when people feel the need to make fun of the school’s acronym – IUPUI. But the Jaguars are getting some well deserved publicity after their coach put his best bare foot forward on Thursday, raising awareness for needy children in Africa.

IUPUI coach Ron Hunter was feeling footloose and fancy free as he paced the sidelines against Oakland (Mich.). Coaching barefoot, Hunter walked it like he talked it as he tried to collect at least 40,000 pairs of shoes to be donated to the less fortunate.

We’ve got great students here and I appreciate all of their support, not only from our students but from around the country. The people of this country have been so generous. I am really excited about it,” said Hunter.

“I’m hoping to reach 150 or 200,000 pairs. I would love to see us reach 500% of our original goal,” said Hunter.

That’s right, Hunter exceeded his 40,000 mark before tip off, collecting 110,000 pairs of shoes prior to the game even starting! There’s still no word from the Golden Grizzlies regarding whether the stench of all those shoes had an effect on their 82-69 loss in Indy.

Best conference call ever!

You might think that conference call’s are just for the media, but you should try to listen in every now and again because you never know what your favorite coach might say next. Or what your favorite media member might say next. Or what your favorite fake media member might say next.

Tuesday’s SEC women’s basketball coaches’ teleconference took a turn for the funny when a couple of wisenheimers managed to get on the air and went `Jerky Boys’ all over some SEC asses.

The prank callers, who were claiming to be legitimate reporters from actual media outlets, managed to get on and ask at least six questions to more than half of the league’s 12 coaches. The questions were graphic in nature and included inquiries about coaches having sexual relations with players and players’ performances based on their menstrual cycles.

“It was a little surreal,” said [associate director for media relations at the SEC, Tammy] Wilson, who was moderating the call between the media and the head coaches.

“The very first question that was asked, honestly, I thought this was some crazy media person who was trying to ask a question and didn’t know quite how to ask it,” she said.

Tom Collen, the Arkansas coach who was asked the first faux question, also seemed to think something similar because he responded to it as if it were a legitimate question.

Nobody seems to know how the pranksters managed to get through on a line that is supposed to be secure to media members, but because of the infiltration, the men’s teleconference set for Thursday might get postponed until this problem gets ironed out. That would be a shame because we were really interested to hear backstabber Billy Donovan comment on how Joakim Noah handled his menstrual cycle during the season.

You gotta choke a lotta kids to get 900 career wins

Like him or hate him, Bob Knight made history last night by upsetting the No. 9 Texas A&M Aggies 68-53, winning his 900th career game. Knight is the only Division I men’s basketball coach to reach the big 9-0-0, so we figured now is as good a time as any to relive some of the more outspoken moments in the surly old coach’s career.

Ooops, almost forgot this inspirational speech from the greatest men’s coach in the history of the game. (Considering it’s Bob Knight, we shouldn’t have to do this, but we will. Slap those earmuffs on all the youngsters out there!)

Hey, according to the big guy, those aren’t vulgar F-bombs; they’re just simple expressions of surprise, anger and dismay.

Tyler Hansbrough proves white men can jump

UNC-Ashville’s Kenny George is a monster. The 7-foot-7, 360-pounder wears a size 26 shoe and has a wingspan of eight and a half feet. Like we said, he’s a friggin’ monster. Against North Carolina on Wednesday, George finished with 14 points, 11 rebounds and four blocks off the bench. But that isn’t the reason he’s making the news today. This is the reason he’s getting gobs of pub:

Yup, that was 6-foot-9 Tyler Hansbrough jumping over George with a single bound. Kinda like the negative image of this play:

You wanna get Jay Bilas fired up? Just mention Michigan

Jay Bilas is usually a fairly reserved guy from what we can tell. Sure, he can be annoying at times because he’ll talk Xs and Os until you’re blue in the face, but he still seems like a pretty nice fellow. But it seems that Bilas has a sore spot when it comes to Michigan coach John Beilein. How sore? Let’s just say that these two probably didn’t spend the holidays together.

Beilein makes his players sound so stupid and clueless that it is insulting. First, and I say this as a guy who thinks that basketball is far more complicated than most seem to understand, to refer to your own basketball understanding as ‘wisdom’ seems a bit much. Knowledge, yes. Wisdom, take a pill. Even John Wooden wouldn’t refer to his own knowledge as ‘wisdom.’ Second, if your system is so complicated that you need to refer to recruited athletes and students admitted to the University of Michigan as the basketball equivalent of toddlers, maybe you should simplify things so you can compete favorably with Harvard, Central Michigan or Western Kentucky.

Bilas’ hate isn’t exclusively reserved for Beilein; turns out that he has a problem with the entire Wolverines program, starting with their AD, Bill Martin. Here’s his take on the team from mid-December.

Asked in a college basketball chat of which program was in bigger trouble — Michigan or Kentucky, Bilas said, “Michigan. They just don’t get it. I think that John Beilein will do a great job, with time. But, it will take time. Michigan had a dirty program, brought in Amaker to clean it up, and he did that. Along the way, he won. He just didn’t crack the NCAA Tournament barrier. Now, with good talent, they are getting their heads bashed in because they are starting over. How do you think those kids feel? Their heads are spinning. It is clear to me that one person needs to go…and that is Bill Martin. He has presided over this, and if the prior coach needed to go, then Martin should go too. If an AD’s job is to put the pieces in place to have a winning program, then Martin is not living up to that end. Sorry, but that is how I see it.
