Get a vasectomy in order to watch March Madness? The ball’s in your court

If you ask us, there is no good time to have vasectomy. However, the Oregon Urology Institute might be on to something with its latest ad campaign. After all, the only thing worse than getting snipped is getting snipped and having to flip back-and-forth between reruns of Family Matters and Dear John all day long.

When March Madness approaches you need an excuse . . . to stay at home in front of the big screen,” says the ad on Eugene’s sports radio AM 1320, aka The Score. “Get your vasectomy at Oregon Urology Institute the day before the tournament starts.

And if you’re not sold on the idea yet, just get a `load’ of the other perks that come along with getting neutered.

To help sell the idea, The Score promised to send each fixed fan a “recovery kit” that includes sports magazines, free pizza delivery and a bag of frozen peas.

“The frozen peas are malleable enough that you can get them right in there and get the swelling down,” [institute administrator Terry] FitzPatrick said.

Digger Phelps gets frisky with a Jayhawks cheerleader

You always hear about Dick Vitale being the biggest off-the-court star in college basketball. “Dicky-V this” and “Dicky-V that”. Well, guess what, Vitale; you’re not the only geriatric on ESPN worth his weight in `old.’

The General quietly walks off the court for the last time

What can you say about Bob Knight that hasn’t already been said? Not much. The guy’s been called every name in the book from a S.O.B. to the G.O.A.T. And they all ring true in their own right. He was a pompous, arrogant, no-nonsense prick when he wanted to be, but there is no denying the longevity or the sustained success he achieved. 902 victories!! All the coach has to say is “scoreboard” when it comes to his legacy. But more importantly, when it comes down to the term “student athlete”, he made it a reality. Say what you will, but he graduated players and that should say as much about the guy as his red face and obscenity laced tirades. Even in retiring, the old ball coach was game planning.

Pat Knight has been the head coach designate since 2005.

“There’s a transition that’s going to take place here from me to Pat and I’ve dwelt on this all year long – about what would be the best way to do this, and how it would be best for him and for the team and for what we can do in the long run to make this the best thing for Texas Tech,” said Knight, who retires with 902 career victories. “I didn’t know, I’ve never really known when I was going to step down from this job. As I thought about it, my first thought was at the end of this season.”

Knight said he spoke with Newell for about an hour and an half Sunday.

“My thinking was that for Pat and for this team – most of which is returning next year – the best thing for the long run for this team would be for Pat and his staff to coach these remaining 10 games,” Knight said. “And (to) get an understanding, get a real feel for each other, be able to think over the course of the spring and summer going into next season about how people had played, how things had been done offensively or defensively, what could be done or couldn’t be done, what to stay away from, what to work on and develop that from a game standpoint as the coach in charge of everything rather than as an assistant coach.

“It was always a problem for me as to just what would be the most effective way in this transition, to make this transition. And with all the thought that I put into it, that’s exactly how I felt that it should be.

But, coach, before you go off into the sunset; can you tell us what the future holds for Bob Knight?

You wanna get Jay Bilas fired up? Just mention Michigan

Jay Bilas is usually a fairly reserved guy from what we can tell. Sure, he can be annoying at times because he’ll talk Xs and Os until you’re blue in the face, but he still seems like a pretty nice fellow. But it seems that Bilas has a sore spot when it comes to Michigan coach John Beilein. How sore? Let’s just say that these two probably didn’t spend the holidays together.

Beilein makes his players sound so stupid and clueless that it is insulting. First, and I say this as a guy who thinks that basketball is far more complicated than most seem to understand, to refer to your own basketball understanding as ‘wisdom’ seems a bit much. Knowledge, yes. Wisdom, take a pill. Even John Wooden wouldn’t refer to his own knowledge as ‘wisdom.’ Second, if your system is so complicated that you need to refer to recruited athletes and students admitted to the University of Michigan as the basketball equivalent of toddlers, maybe you should simplify things so you can compete favorably with Harvard, Central Michigan or Western Kentucky.

Bilas’ hate isn’t exclusively reserved for Beilein; turns out that he has a problem with the entire Wolverines program, starting with their AD, Bill Martin. Here’s his take on the team from mid-December.

Asked in a college basketball chat of which program was in bigger trouble — Michigan or Kentucky, Bilas said, “Michigan. They just don’t get it. I think that John Beilein will do a great job, with time. But, it will take time. Michigan had a dirty program, brought in Amaker to clean it up, and he did that. Along the way, he won. He just didn’t crack the NCAA Tournament barrier. Now, with good talent, they are getting their heads bashed in because they are starting over. How do you think those kids feel? Their heads are spinning. It is clear to me that one person needs to go…and that is Bill Martin. He has presided over this, and if the prior coach needed to go, then Martin should go too. If an AD’s job is to put the pieces in place to have a winning program, then Martin is not living up to that end. Sorry, but that is how I see it.

Bluegrass nation is mourning

There must be something in the water being supplied to college campuses across the country. There’s no other way to explain the insaneness that we’ve all experienced since the first pigskin went sailing through the sky back in October. But luckily for us; it doesn’t look like the fun is stopping with an upset-filled BCS race. Nope, this craziness could be on pace to go deep into March. That is if the crushing of Kentucky by Gardner-Webb is any indication.

Two games into the Billy Gillespie era of Wildcat hoops and he’s already looking for a rock to crawl under. The coach was blunt, summing up the night by simply saying “We just got our tails whipped.” Of course, that’s like saying that Apollo Creed got his tail whipped by Ivan Drago. Don’t sell your program short, coach.

But to be fair, Gillespie didn’t make any excuses for his team after the game.

It was a great exhibition of basketball by Gardner-Webb,” Gillispie said. “They just came into our place and I thought they whipped us in every phase of the game. The box score was not indicative of how bad they beat us.

Kentucky never led during the 84-68 thrashing as the Runnin’ Bulldogs raced out to a 14-0 advantage. In fact, the Wildcats never got any closer than seven points for the remainder of the game. Everybody might be harping on Michigan for their early season fumble against Appalachian State or USC for falling to a 41-point dog in Stanford, but at least you know those are universities. After we first saw the headline – Gardner-Webb Shocks Kentucky – we thought that the Wildcats had been rolled up by a law firm.

A lot of people will think this is a misprint, but I hope not,” Gardner-Webb coach Rick Scruggs said. “I hope they get to see it and can enjoy it. It’s going to take a few days to settle in.

It might take a few days to settle in, but it shouldn’t take nearly that long for Boiling Springs, N.C., to declare November 7th as “Rick Scruggs Day”.

To prove she’s not a nappy headed ho, Rutgers player wants cash

Kia Vaughn is suing Don Imus, CBS Radio, CBS Corp, and possibly anyone with money because Imus called her a nappy headed ho on the radio. Just when you thought lawsuits couldn’t get more ridiculous in this country and just when you thought the stupid Don Imus thing was finally dead, here comes the cash grab. Frankly, we’re suprised it took this long.

According to the lawsuit and her scumbag lawyer, the comments caused Vaughn to be humiliated, embarrassed and publicly mocked. So much so in fact that the “full effect of the damage remains to be seen.” (Translation: settle with us out of court before we ask for more money.)

This is about Kia Vaughn’s good name,” Ancowitz said. “She would do anything to return to her life as a student and respected basketball player — a more simple life before Imus opened his mouth on April 4.

Wait… what? Who the fuck is Kia Vaughn? Before she filed this lawsuit, we don’t think anyone outside of her dorm knew who she was. Now her reputation is ruined? Listen, ho(ney), you’ve done more to damage your “good name” by filing this lawsuit than anything that idiot Imus said. You think people are saying to her as she’s walking down a street, “hey, you’re that nappy headed ho!”? No. Nobody could pick her out of a lineup even if they put her next to five midgets.

But hey, listen, we understand, the WNBA only pays about $35k a year.

Ashley Judd officially has the brains to go with the beauty

After following in the footsteps of so many young ballers and deciding to turn pro early, one of our favorite college basketball fans is finally the owner of a bachelor’s degree in French. Willdcat super babe Ashley Judd had the opportunity to cross the stage on Sunday (it’s unclear if she actually did or not) with 4,000 other students after completing the one class she never finished before bolting for the big screen in 1990.

Confidentiality laws prevent the university from releasing how exactly Judd received her degree, most likely it was via correspondence, but can you imagine being some pimple faced freshman and having this bombshell walk into class and ask you “Is this seat taken?” We’re guessing that most would be reduced to grunts and head shaking.

It’s time we stopped talking about Imus

BORRRRRRRING!

Now that MSNBC has pulled the plug on the Don Imus show (but you better believe they’ll continue to mine the issue for ratings on their cable network), are we halfway to ending this ridiculous media story already? A board member at CBS Radio has also expressed hope that Imus would be fired from his radio show as well. So when that happens, is it over? Can it please be over?

Well, of course not. Someone is going to hire Imus because his name is more recognizable now than it has been in years, if not actually reaching the highest brand awareness it’s ever been. So all this wasted outrage is just going to be more eventual ratings and more money for a washed up shock jock who has no redeeming features. Shouldn’t we just let useless people fade away? We are sick of seeing his shriveled mug already. So that’s it folks, we promise no more Imus on this blog. Unless he kills himself.

But before we go, feel free to email the idiot who thinks that redirecting nappyho.com to the Rutgers womens basketball team site is hilarious. He can be reached at [email protected]. We don’t know anything about Form.tv but this isn’t clever. It’s just lame.

Thank God, now we can concentrate on Tenneesee vs Rutgers

Hopefully this is the last pic
of Noah we ever publish

Now that the most predictable and boring NCAA Tournament in modern history is over, we can look forward to the title game between the Lady Volunteers and the Scarlet Damsels or something. Hell, we’re going to do something never done before in the history of blogging — we’re gonna pre-live-blog the thing:

10:54 Player dribbles up the court and awkwardly jacks up a three. Rebound by another player. Kicks it back out. Another awkward three. Rebound and putback.

10:20 It’s a steal. Full sprint the other way. Layup.

9:45 Rinse. Repeat.

We don’t mean to bash womens basketball but it’s really just a terrible game to watch. There are some people out there who love the game, and good for them, but we are so sick of the marketing of the college game (and the WNBA) ad nauseum during all mens basketball contests. There is no chance that anyone who isn’t already predisposed to watching womens college bball sees one of these ESPN commercials (“men out, ladies in”) and thinks, yeah, I’m totally tuning in for that. So stop shoving it down our throats.

Sorry, just a little bitter today because what arguably is the best event in sports turned out to be such a dud. Was there a single true buzzer beater in the entire tournament? Was there a big upset at all? (VCU beating overrated Duke doesn’t count.) Was there a defining moment? What a colossal waste of time.
