Radio Producer: Hey, you know what would be a great idea? Let’s do a fake radio interview with Allen Iverson so we can make him sound like a thug and make ourselves sound racist in one fell swoop!
Radio Hosts: That sounds hilarious! Let’s make sure we mention Mexicans while we’re at it. And weed. Don’t forget weed.
We find most sports radio to be completely retarded and Jeff Vexler and Walter Pasacrita at KTKR down in San Antonio aren’t doing anything to change our minds. Last week, they did a skit of a mock interview with Allen Iverson that Spurs officials called “highly offensive and very inappropriate.” In the skit, Iverson (we haven’t heard the skit itself but are willing to bet dollars to donuts that “Iverson” was speaking in an exaggerated urban accent) talks about providing the Spurs with some weed, looking for sex with Mexican women, and firing a gun into the air to celebrate being picked #1 in the NBA draft.
We thought the Imus situation was completely overblown but these two guys have to be complete idiots to think that skit would fly. You get the feeling that if they had a TV show, they’d do the interview with some guy in blackface as Iverson. Now, some of you might think the world is getting too PC but this skit is offensive not just because it’s borderline racist — even worse, it’s neither funny nor original.
The Spurs won’t revoke the hosts’ press credentials but they are pulling Greg Popovich’s weekly appearances on the station.

Iverson is an exceptional ball player… — …but he also IS a thug. Nothing wrong calling things with their proper names.
what did he actually do? — Tatoos, corn rows and being a little immature towards your hardheaded coach early in your career does not a thug make. I just think he’ll be embarrased at his style choice 30 years from now the way I’m sure that Oscar Gamble must be embarrased the way he wore that afro back in 1976. I vaguely remember a domestic dispute a couple years ago but he’s in a long line there, chief. And I believe I recall something in high school where he got in trouble before going to G-Town, but what other incidents label him a thug? Was he caught with weed? Or on video telling about getting street justice for snitches, then a few years later throw a punch from behind a wall of 7 footers? Wait, that was the other guy.
And whatever the transgressions of AI, speaking in a mock tone and slandering the shit out of somebody isn’t right.
damn — look at RJ coming to the defense of my boy AI.
As far as I know, AI has exactly 0 gun charges, which is 1 less than Barry Switzer. But AI is a thug and Barry Switzer is a good ol boy.
The NBA is full of thugs and they certainly need a personal conduct policy but Iverson isn’t over of them.
What is this country becoming? — First of all, you’re writing this column, and you didn’t even hear the skit?! I don’t understand how anyone can comment on something they haven’t even listened to. Secondly, this was a bit, a joke; something done in jest. Iverson does actually talk and look like a thug. There are a lot of Mexicans who live in San Antonio, and this was a joke built on that. It’s a joke! Get a sense of humor, or here’s an idea: SWITCH THE STATION. Nobody forces anyone to listen to the radio. If you personally find something offensive, then change the channel. Nobody’s career needs to be ruined because a few people find something offensive. Not having your feelings hurt by somebody’s words isn’t protected by the Constitution, but freedom of speech is. Don’t forget that.
clip — send me the clip and I’ll rewrite this column if any of what i said turns out to be wrong. But I doubt it.
