Sep 6 in Sports History: Cal Ripken breaks Lou Gehrig’s record

In 1995: Cal Ripken Jr. of the Baltimore Orioles broke Lou Gerhig’s record by playing in his 2,131 consecutive game. Ripken’s streak began on May 30, 1982 and didn’t end until 1998, after 2,632 games. The game against the California Angels was stopped in the fifth inning for 22 minutes as soon as the game was official. The crowd celebrated as the huge banner counting the games dropped from the warehouse across from Camden Yards. Ripken then took a lap around the field, shaking hands with the crowd. He even homered off Shawn Boskie in the 4th inning. The Orioles won the game 4-2.

In 2002 The Minnesota Twins defeated the Oakland A’s 6-0 at the Metrodome, ending the A’s record-setting 20-game winning streak. The A’s defeated the Royals 12-11 the night before in Oakland to win their 20th straight on a dramatic game-winning homer by Scott Hatteberg. The two teams would meet in the postseason, with the Twins winning a five game series.

Assistant Coach tackles 13 year old

Father of the Year!

An assistant coach on a Pop Warner team has been charged with child abuse after he tackled a 13 year old. Video shows that at the end of a play, a player from the Stockton Bears made a late hit on a player from the Riverback Redskins. That player’s father (the Redskins assistant coach) didn’t like it so he ran onto the field and hit the Bears player from behind. That triggered a brawl.

The coach, identified as Cory Petero, then tried to hop a fence to escape police. He turned himself in later and was booked on one count of child abuse.

It’s good to know that fathers are still taking an interest in the lives of their kids. In a society where all too often boys are raised by single mothers, it’s heartwarming that there are fathers out there still showing love to their boys the only way they know how — attacking a rival 13 year old.

And they say society is falling apart.

Materazzi confirms he insulted Zidane’s sister

Marco Materazzi, the guy whose verbal jabs lead to Zidane melting down and headbutting him in the chest and leading to Zidane’s ejection, confirmed today that he insulted Zidane’s sister.

n Tuesday’s interview with the Gazzetta dello Sport, Materazzi disclosed that after he held his opponent’s shirt, Zidane said: “If you want, I’ll give you the jersey later.”

“I responded that I preferred his sister, it’s true,” Materazzi said. “It wasn’t something nice, true. But luckily there have been dozens of players who have confirmed that a lot worse things are said on the field.

Now Materazzi is a dirty pig but really, we think Zidane overreacted a little bit here. When it was first reported that Materazzi called him a “son of a terrorist whore”, we all sort of understood why Zidane flew off the handle. But an insult to his sister isn’t quite the same thing. In the heirarchy of relatives you can’t insult, it’s 1) mother 2) grandmother, 3) wife and kids, 4) sister 5) father and finally 6) brother.

Materazzi also said that his door was open if Zidane wanted to make peace. Hey jackass, considering you’re the one who insulted him and got him sent off and shamed on international television, perhaps you should be the one apologizing.

The Full Count: No No-No in Ninth

1. Close but not quite: No pitcher has recorded a no-hitter in more than two years, since Randy Johnson was perfect in May 2004. But a very unlikely pitcher came very close to the feat yesterday. It was the Nationals’ Ramon Ortiz, who took a no-no into the ninth inning against the Cardinals. But it was broken up by an Aaron Miles leadoff single, and then by an Albert Pujols homerun (43). So perfection dodged yet another pitcher yesterday, and in the end this is just an insignificant last place over first place win for the Nats.

2. Back and forth: At one point in the season the Minnesota Twins weren’t even near the playoff picture. But now the Twins and the White Sox are trading around the Wild Card lead almost daily. Now the lead is in the hands on the Twins, who defeated the Devil Rays 2-1 yesterday. It was their 13th straight win against Tampa. Chicago is now right behind after a narrow 3-2 loss to the Red Sox, who witnessed the return of many key players yesterday. With Manny Ramirez, Trot Nixon, and Jason Varitek back in the lineup, the Sox defeated the Sox in extras. Chicago did see another great start by Jon Garland, who is 8-1 with a 2.83 ERA since the All Star break. Minnesota and Chicago won’t play each other again until the last series of the season, at the Metrodome.

3. Barry’s back: Barry Bonds had yet to catch his usual form this year, which could be his last as a Giant. But now he is in the groove like he was from 2001-2004, and he is hitting homeruns like there’s no tomorrow. Bonds went deep for the third straight game yesterday, helping the Giants to a 5-4 win in Cincy. In his last six games Bonds has 5 homers, 7 RBIs, and is slugging a preposterous 1.412. He’s only 25 back of Aaron now with 730 career homeruns. When will he catch him? Sometime next summer, if he plays.

4. Pitching=success: The Los Angeles Angels have remained in the playoff hunt, and it’s not because of their offense. It’s their pitching staff that’s carried them this season, like yesterday when they defeated the Orioles 1-0. Jered Weaver returned to form after two straight losses with 7 shutout innings. Then Francisco Rodriguez, also known as K-Rod, shut the door for his 39th save of the season. That ties him with Bobby Jenks for the major-league lead, and Rodriguez remains the most underrated closer in baseball. At age 24 he has 98 career saves and a 2.32 career ERA, including a 1.82 mark this year. The Angels are now 6.5 back of the A’s in the AL West even though they have won 3 straight. Their staff will need to carry them if they want to make the postseason again.

5. To return or not to return: The Twins, already leading the WC as mentioned before, could get a boost by the middle of the month. Francisco Liriano threw 78 pitches in a bullpen session yesterday, and said that he felt great. He will throw in batting practice on Wednesday and could return before mid-September. With their other injured starter, Brad Radke, there is more questions. Radke, who hasn’t thrown since August 25, has a stress fracture in his right shoulder. The doctors have told him not to pitch for a few weeks as he recovers, though no specific return date has been announced.

Sep 5 in Sports History: Cassius Clay wins Gold

In 1960: A young boxer from Louisville named Cassius Clay (His mamma named him Cassius, we gonna call him Cassius) won the Gold Medal in the light heavyweight division at the Rome Olympics. The 18-year-old future heavyweight champ defeated Zbiginew Pietrzykowski of Poland by a unanimous decision. He turned pro later that year and changed his name to Muhammed Ali in 1964.

In 1972 At the Munich Olympics, 11 Israeli athletes were taken hostage by a group of Palestinian militants and were later killed in a shootout. The Games were put on hold for 24 hours and 80,000 people attended a memorial service in the Olympic Stadium. The next day, after serious debate, IOC president Avery Brundage made the famous declaration, “the Games must go on.”

In 1994: In front of a national audience on Monday Night Football and a Candlestick Park record crowd, Jerry Rice of the San Francisco 49ers caught his third TD pass of the game to break Jim Brown’s NFL record with his 127th career touchdown. Rice’s three scores paced the Niners to an easy 44-14 victory over the Los Angeles Raiders. Rice went on to score an untouchable 208 career touchdowns (Marvin Harrison of the Colts is the current active leader with 110).

Is Ben Roethlisberger on the cover of Madden 07?

What’s next?

Ben Roethlisberger (aka Meathead) went into emergency surgery on Sunday morning to remove his appendix. The appendix had not burst. Roethlisberger has been declared out for the opener against Miami but will probably be out another week or two recovering from surgery. Obviously Ben is a fast healer as evidenced by his speedy recovery from his motorcycle accident but this certainly throws a wrench into Pittsburgh’s title defense.

The defense now rests in the hands of Charlie Batch who did go 2-0 last year when Ben was out with injury. If anything should happen to Batch, the newly signed backup is Brian St. Pierre. Yeah, we don’t know who he is either.

For years now, the loser of the Super Bowl usually suffers from the “Super Bowl hangover”. But as of right now, nothing bad has happened to the Seattle Seahawks while the Steelers have suffered a couple of setbacks already. We have to wonder whether the football gods really intended for Seattle to win the Super Bowl… (Pittsburgh fans say, “get over it already!”)

MLB Cost Index for Sept 4 2006

[The MLB Cost Index is a calculation of the amount each team pays for a win and the efficiency of the payroll that the GM has put together.]

With only about 25 games to go, it’s time we revisited the MLB Cost Index. The biggest bargains this year? The Marlins, A’s, Twins and Reds. The A’s are all but assured of a division title and the Twins are within spitting distance of the Wildcard. While the Reds and Marlins will probably not make the postseason, at least they are giving their fans something to root for down the stretch. Not bad for a $15M payroll like the Marlins. Meanwhile, the Red Sox Angels, Braves, Cubs and Mariners are toast with nothing to show for it except a $100M average payorll.

Odds and Ends: Andy Roddick and Maria Sharapova are not dating

Andy Roddick told reporters a million times that he and Sharapova are just good friends. “You know, we’re friendly. We’re in the same places. I think she’s a great girl. You know, we’ll talk. That’s about it.” Damn, Andy, how can you be friends with Maria Sharapova and not want to run up in her like Bruce Jenner? (Man that’s an old joke. Some of you kids don’t even know who Bruce Jenner is right? Now stay off of my lawn!) What is wrong with Andy Roddick? We’re officially starting the Andy Roddick is gay speculation. And of course, this post is nothing more than a reason to post another photo of Miss Sharapova.

Team USA Basketball loses to Greece

Chokers

We’re not exactly sure what happened. Even after reading the article a few times, it’s hard to figure out how team USA Basketball lost to Greece in the semifinals. It wouldn’t even have been acceptable to lose in the finals but this team managed to choke again. Say what you want about other countries developing players that play as a team, the USA still has more basketball talent than any other country can put together. A team with Carmello Anthony, Dwyane Wade and LeBron James should not be beaten by a team from Greece. It just shouldn’t happen. And wasn’t this supposed to be a real “team” that we put out there on the court?

According to the AP article, team USA was done in by poor 3 point shooting and only shooting 59% from the free throw line. Carmello had 27 points, Wade had 19, and LeBron had 17 in the losing effort.

This sounds familiar doesn’t it? Not just that we haven’t won gold in international play since 2000 but Coach Krzyzewski having the most talent and not being able to bring home the championship.
