Odds and Ends for Mon Apr 24 2006: Why we love hockey

This clip from Saturday’s Sabres-Flyers game illustrates why hockey is the toughest sport in the world. First you have a rookie getting laid out in the NHL playoffs, and then a fight breaks out because the rest of his teammates are defending him. And actual punches, not NBA-style posturing.

In other news…

[The 700 Level]: Phillies might not get into the playoffs, but fans have a new hero.

[Las Vegas Review Journal]: Andre Agassi is a big tipper.

[San Jose Mercury News]: OLN will become versus… as in the network vs good ratings.

[MSNBC]: Duke Lacrosse player wants to transfer to Syracuse. Syracuse treats him like a fat chick at a frat party

[YAY Sports]: Carmelo Anthony’s agent must hate him
[SFGate]: Iran to let women attend soccer games. Keith Hernandez says…

Odds and Ends for Thur Apr 20 2006: Toronto Toronto Toronto

Two big items coming out of Toronto today. First, Chris Bosh re-signs with the Raptors, which is great news for the basketball fans in Toronto because he’s the only decent player on a team that desperately needs a franchise player. Second, the Leafs fire Pat Quinn just 2 days after the end of the season. Chris Bosh’s signing is more important to the Raptors than the Leafs firing Quinn but you’d never know it from fan reaction.

In other news…

[Pittsburgh Post-Gazette]: Chris Shelton makes Pirates GM look like an idiot.

[BFLOBLOG]: A walk down misery lane: Top-Five Worst Bills Draft Classes

[BrandWeek]: OLN isn’t giving up despite their hockey coverage only averageing 165,000 views.

[The Bleacher Bums]: Ruben Sierra is trying to pull a Rickey Henderson.

[Yahoo]: Moe Williams guilty of disorderly conduct in Vikings Love Boat trial.

And finally, the too-ovious-a-joke photo of the day.

Odds and Ends for Wed Apr 19 2006: Betting on T.O.

Is that a mini Daunte playing dice in the back?

Is there anything better (er… worse) than being a sports gambling junkie? You can basically bet on anything you want. The latest proposition bet from the folks at WagerWeb is which player Terrell Owens will get into a fight with first, either verbally or physically. The runaway “favorite” is Drew Bledsoe at -400, followed by Bill Parcells at +100 and Jerry Jones at +300. The least likely? Roy Williams at +2000, which is surprising considering that Roy was the guy who broke TO’s ankle and started the whole Philly fiasco in the first place. Or Maybe the bookmakers think that Roy did him a favor by indirectly getting him a huge contract.

In other news…

[Mr. Irrelevan]: Minor League baseball team to give out Vikings Love Boat Collectible

[YAY Sports]: Adam Morrison and Rudy Gay are coming out

[Ben Maller]: Tiger wins more at the casino than at the Masters. Which is something you have in common with Tiger.

[Covers.com]: Finally, someone who agrees with us that Coach K is overrated and sucks.

Odds and Ends for Friday Apr 14 2006: Las Vegas Sonics doesn’t have the same ring to it

Saying that the Seattle Supersonics have the worst lease in the NBA, Stern criticized city officials for not being interested in having an NBA team there. Stern said that he would support the owners move to another city when the current lease expires in 2010 unless the State helps them get a new stadium. Stern is angry that the city and state won’t at least renovate Key Arena. Check out SonicsCentral’s take on this.

In other news…

Odds and Ends for Wed April 12 2006: Joakim Noah is already rich

Here’s an interesting article from Sports Law Blog about why Joakim Noah can afford to pass up a chance to be a lottery pick in the NBA draft to play one more year in college. His father is a rock star in France (which apparently is quite lucrative) so Joakim doesn’t feel the pressure to support his whole family or help them get out of the ghetto.

Despite Charles Barkley’s quote (“I hope a lot of these young kids look at [Dwayne Wade], who went to college. Everybody is in such a hurry. Hey, the money is not going anywhere… and if you go to the right college, you can get paid there… Alabama, Georgia, South Carolina, Tennessee.”), it’s hard to resist the guaranteed multimillions if you grew up in the projects. College is fun, but so is getting paid.

In other news…

[USA Today]: Leinart already has fired his agent, just three weeks before the draft.

[MSNBC]: Mooch defends Brett Favre’s feet dragging

[MySA.com]: 10 year old bowls perfect game. Damn overachievers.

[You Tube]: (video) Fine, we’ll make the obvious joke: Dick Cheney throws out the first pitch for the Nationals – hits 80 year old guy in the face.

Carmen Electra is the new Woman We Love

So many great Carmen Electra pics out there and so few that we can actually use on SC. For example, this photo is completely PG yet is the most X rated pic we’ve ever seen.

Carmen is actually one of those people who are famous for being famous… but who cares? She’s just smoking hot. I think she was on Baywatch and has made a few movies or something but mostly we know her from just being on Howard Stern and looking good in public.

We’ll even forgive her for her misguided early music career (girl rap group?), especially since she’s teaching women all over how to strip their way to fitness.

Good choice, Sportscolumn readers, good choice.
