5 Reasons to hate the Steelers and their fans

Five reasons to hate the Steelers and their fans

5. Bill Cowher’s face. Bill Cowher’s chin. Bill Cowher spitting on everyone. Basically, Bill Cowher. You know, if I had a spitting problem, I’d cover my mouth when I yelled, but Cowher loves to berate referees and let the spit fly. Now, it’s all unintentional (maybe) but should an official really be subjected to getting doused with spit after every call that Bill doesn’t like?

4. No cheerleaders. By all accounts, there are no hot women in Pittsburgh. Or at least, they move away as soon as they can scrounge up bus fare to another city. Hell, the last hottie Pittsburgh produced was Sharon Stone and that was over a century ago. But, can’t they import enough decent looking girls to form a cheerleading squad? Instead, we have to have fat ass Jerome Bettis prancing around to rile up the crowd.

3. Hello. People in TV land, get a Fathead. This is how big a tool Roethlisberg is.

2. Steelers fans’ convenient selective memory of Steelers teams outside of the 1970s. If you talk to them, the “one for the thumb” is going to happen on the heels of their 4 Super Bowl victories, nevermind that the last one was during the 1979 season.

1. “Yinz”. Also seen written as ‘You-ins’ or ‘Yuns’ and is still used today in Pittsburgh. As a result of the distinct denial that life exists outside of Allegheny County and the popular belief among Pittsburghers that it’s better if you procreate with others like you, a unique language has evolved in the Pittsburgh area. Jackie Robinson’s daughter hates Roberto Clemente

The daughter of Jackie Robinson thinks Major League Baseball should not retire Roberto Clemente’s No. 21, the New York Daily News reported Tuesday. The Hispanics Across America advocacy group wants Clemente’s number set aside the way the late Robinson’s No. 42 was nine years ago for being the first black player in the major leagues. But Sharon Robinson said that honor should remain for her father only.

“To my understanding, the purpose of retiring my father’s number is that what he did changed all of baseball, not only for African-Americans but also for Latinos, so I think that purpose has been met,” she said.

What exactly has she ever done for baseball? What does it matter if MLB retires Clemente’s number? What has Roberto Clemente ever done to her? Retiring Clemente’s number has absolutely no bearing on the legacy of Jackie Robinson. You won’t see any ESPN Classic specials on how Clemente changed race relations in the United States. I’m not saying either way whether Clemente’s number should be retired but Sharon Robinson should shut her trap.

We’re rooting for Central Michigan University!

CMU enrollment brochure

I don’t know a thing about the Chippewas and their current record is 3-13 so they probably won’t even make the NIT, but we are rooting for them anyway. OK, fine, this is just a weak excuse to bring up the CMU bikini calendar that has the university brass in an uproar.

We do not feel that this kind of publication serves the university well or the students,” said university spokesman Steve Smith.

Really? Cause I think raising money for Hurricane Katrina by showcasing the hot chicks you have on campus serves the university pretty well.

Charges pressed against Lee Nailon

(Sorry, I couldn’t resist putting “press”, “lee”, and “nailon” in the title.)

Remember the uproar when Barkley once said after a game that it was the type of game that made you go home and beat your wife? Well, Lee Nailon must have had a hell of a bad game against Minnesota because he was arrested Tuesday for a domestic dispute and didn’t dress for the Sixers game against the Kings. Too bad Lee isn’t in Seattle, he could’ve done a two-fer-one deal on a lawyer with Sean Locklear.

Armed skiers and snipers at the Olympics

Among the security precautions at the Turin Games will be snipers and armed skiiers on the lookout for any terrorist threat. Damn, I’m definitely watching the Biathlon this year.

Italy has already spent $110M on security and the final bill could reach about $1 Billion. Yet, somehow, they couldn’t stop protestors from grabbing the Olympic torch.

Isiah Thomas sued for sexual harassment

Anucha Browne Sanders, a former Knicks executive is suing Isiah Thomas and MSG Sports for sexual harassment. According to the lawsuit, Zeke was, at first, hostile towards her, making crude remarks to staff and then changed his tune and started making numerous advances towards her. (You know, when Zeke threatened Bill Simmons last week, maybe he was just coming on to him.) She claims that he tried to kiss her last month and once told her, “I know you think I’m inappropriate. But I’m in love with you.”

Now, I’m no fan of Isiah Thomas, although I appreciate that he’ll keep the Knicks a terrible team with his tinkering, but I’ll withold judgement, even if this is the guy who single-handedly swindled all the CBA owners and bankrupted the league in 12 months. Still, if you need a smoking gun, Sanders said that Thomas “compared his feelings for her to experiences the characters had in the film ‘Love and Basketball.'” I’m pretty sure no one can make that up.

Vince Carter cares about the kids

Remember in Reality Bites when the newspaper editor asks Winona Ryder to define irony and she has no idea how to define it? Well, she might have just gone with this quote from Vince Carter (on Kobe scoring 81):

The only bad thing about it is that younger kids, whose minds are easily warped, are going to think, ‘Ohhh! I am going to go out there and do it instead of (honoring) the team concept first,'” Carter said yesterday. “That is what is missing in the game, guys understanding how to play as a team.

Are you kidding me? Vince Carter is talking about “team”? This is the same guy who admitted he stopped trying toward the end of his tenure with the Raptors. A guy who has been called whiny, selfish, and a baby. Vince Carter’s entire career is based on getting on Sportscenter and now he’s mad because someone else is dominating his airtime. Ask any Toronto fan if Vince Carter cares about anyone but himself.

Kings reject trade for Ron Artest

Update 1/24: Artest says he’ll go anywhere and now the trade is on again. Make up your mind already. I’m beginning to hate this story.

Update 6:40 PM: Kings reject trade for Ron Artest. How come no one loves Ron-Ron?

Update: Artest traded to Kings for Peja Stojakovic. I guess Vecsey finally got one right.

We previously said that the Golden State Warriors were the last potential suckers suitors for Ron Artest but it looks like the Sacramento Kings have jumped into the fray. According to the NY Post, the trade is “exceedingly close” and just waiting for the Kings to pull the trigger. However, this was reported by Peter Vecsey “on excellent authority” so that means the trade probably won’t happen.

GQ’s Ten Most Hated Athletes

I love top 10 lists. (Except when they are accompanied by unfunny commentary from D list celebs and comedians…ahem…VH1.) In February’s GQ, they list the top 10 most hated athletes by their peers. Here’s the list. My comments in italics.

10. Lleyton Hewitt “Hewitt is disliked by every other player on the international circuit.”

9. A. J. Pierzynski “Pierzynski, crouched behind the plate, took a pitch to the groin. Rushing to his aid, trainer Stan Conte asked him how he felt. “Like this!” Pierzynski grunted, then savagely kneed Conte in the balls.”

8. Phil Mickelson “Phil Mickelson literally has no friends out there. He annoys everybody.”

7. Bonzi Wells “He was fined for bad-mouthing his own fans in Sports Illustrated.”

6. Michael Iaconelli I’m sorry, bass fishing? I thought this was a list of athletes.

5. Kobe Bryant I’ll take the rapists for $200, Alex

4. Curt Schilling The biggest blowhard in all of sports.

3. Kurt Busch He told NASCAR to lick his salty balls. Yeah, and?

2. Barry Bonds Biggest dick in baseball

1. Terrell Owens Interesting that the magazine that just did a feature story on TO makes him the #1 most hated athlete.
