Zidane headbutt video

The World Cup Final was mostly a boring contest after the first half until Zinedine Zidane blew his top and headbutted Materazzi in the chest after the two exchanged some words. Zidane ruined his spectacular World Cup showing and perhaps career by getting sent off for a ridiculously stupid play.

Here’s the video of Zidane’s headbut. The best part is the french announcer yelling “why?…. why… WHY?”

We are anxiously awaiting Zidane’s explanation. What could Materazzi possibly have said to cause Zidane to go bonkers? Did he talk about his mother? Did he call him a homo? Did he say “Jerry Lewis sucks!”? Inquiring minds wants to know.

Zidane — To me the bigger deal was that the refs basically waited and rewatched what happened on the Jumbotron and then threw him out of the game.  I was rooting for Italy, but if I was a fan of France I’d be pretty pissed off.

i don’t know — I think he just conferred with the ref’s assistant.

Regardless, he deserved to get kicked off.

Zidane — I still don’t understand why he would do something like that.  That’s something you expect from a 21-year-old rookie, not a 34-year-old “legend.”

Pourquoi………….. POURQUOI?????????????????

Headbutt — I preface this by saying that I was rooting for Italy, however the sports fan in me thought Zidane got a little wronged here.

In my opinion, it’s lucky that it was the French who were victimized by the headbutt fiasco because they’ll just lie down and take it.  The refs took five minutes before they threw Zidane out of the which means they could easily have been checking the replay on the Jumbotron like the announcer said.

Since there’s replay in the Super Bowl, that’s a bad example.  However let’s say Jordan Farmar punched Joakim Noah in the nads during the overtime of last year’s NCAA title game.  No foul was called for five minutes, however while Noah was being helped off the court they replayed it on the Jumbotron and then the refs saw it, called the intentional and ejected Farmar from the game for throwing a punch.  Every student/alumnus/fan/person who gambled on UCLA would go ballistic.  Granted the students of UCLA could annex the country of France in three days…..but still.  I’ve always been a believer in the fact that if you don’t call a foul immediately, it lends to suspicion.

headbutt — The rumor going around is that Materazzi (the defender who got headbutted) made a racist comment aimed at Zidane who is of Algerian descent.

interesting — I had no idea Zidane was of Algerian descent.

Whatever it was, I’m sure he said something really bad. However, the headbutt is just weird. Why not just punch him in the jaw?

What Materatzi said — According to an Italian lipreader, Materatzi said something along these lines.  This is all Materatzi speaking, the camera angle wasn’t good enough to get Zidane’s comments:
First, he pinched him
Following the pinch, Materatzi said “No”
Then he called Zidane a “Liar”
Then “I wish an ugly death to you and your family.”  Unfortunately, Zidane had just heard his mother was deathly ill.
Finally Materatzi said “Go fuck yourself” And ended up on the floor by a header to the solar plexus

Again, I can’t guarantee the quotes, all hearsay from the BBC.
Hope that cleared >some< things up

this makes sense — so zidane was upset cause his mother is gravely ill and snapped AND materazzi was telling the truth when he denied calling him a “son of a terrorist whore”.

I wonder what he said about his sister.
