MLB Cost Index for Sept 4 2006

[The MLB Cost Index is a calculation of the amount each team pays for a win and the efficiency of the payroll that the GM has put together.]

With only about 25 games to go, it’s time we revisited the MLB Cost Index. The biggest bargains this year? The Marlins, A’s, Twins and Reds. The A’s are all but assured of a division title and the Twins are within spitting distance of the Wildcard. While the Reds and Marlins will probably not make the postseason, at least they are giving their fans something to root for down the stretch. Not bad for a $15M payroll like the Marlins. Meanwhile, the Red Sox Angels, Braves, Cubs and Mariners are toast with nothing to show for it except a $100M average payorll.

MLB Cost Index for Mon July 24 2006

[The MLB Cost Index is a calculation of the amount each team pays for a win and the efficiency of the payroll that the GM has put together.]

Here’s a little measure of a badly run team: top 15 payroll playing sub-.500 ball. Orioles, Phillies, Mariners, Braves, Astros, Cubs, and Dodgers. Perhaps not in all these cases but in most, heads will need to roll after this season, if not soon.

MLB Cost Index for Mon July 10 2006 – All Star Edition

[The MLB Cost Index is a calculation of the amount each team pays for a win and the efficiency of the payroll that the GM has put together.]

Well, we’re halfway through the season and here are the winners and losers in cost efficiency.

Winners:
Rockies, Reds, A’s, Tigers, Padres, Rangers. All of these ballclubs are in the top half of the Cost Index and all have a reasonable chance of winning their division or at least making the playoffs. Meanwhile, special mention goes to the Marlins who despite having a payroll less than a Yankee starter have managed to put up a respectable 38 wins so far.

Losers:

Phillies, Braves, and Cubs. All three are in the bottom 10 of the Cost Index and all three have no shot of making the playoffs. Special mention goes to the Angels who despite having the #3 payroll, are at the bottom of the wide open AL West. They spent $40M more than the A’s this year and trail the A’s by 2.5 games.

MLB Cost Index for Mon June 26 2006

[The MLB Cost Index is a calculation of the amount each team pays for a win and the efficiency of the payroll that the GM has put together.]

The Twins and the Royals are moving up in the Cost Index rankings after going 9-1 and 7-3 respectively. It’s too late for the Royals but Minnesota could become a playoff team with a low payroll. Well… at 9.5 games out, maybe not. But it beats being the Royals.

MLB Cost Index for Mon June 19 2006

[The MLB Cost Index is a calculation of the amount each team pays for a win and the efficiency of the payroll that the GM has put together.]

It looks like the A’s are the big winners this week. They’ve won 10 in a row and are up to #6 on the Cost Index. In fact, they are the only team with a bottom 10 payroll that’s leading their division. The Diamondbacks are close. On the flip side, the Cubs, Angels and Braves are the biggest disappointments in baseball.

MLB Cost Index for Mon June 5 2006

[The MLB Cost Index is a calculation of the amount each team pays for a win and the efficiency of the payroll that the GM has put together.]

Once the darlings and “great chance to repeat” team of baseball, the White Sox have fallen on rough times. 3-7 in their last ten has dropped them a few slots in the Cost Index. Of course, you’d still rather be a White Sox fan than a Cubs fan when it comes to payroll efficiency.. and recent championships.

MLB Cost Index for Tues May 30 2006

The biggest losers this week are the A’s, who continue their awful play by losing to the Royals. The A’s have dropped to 14th in the Cost Index. That $62.3M payroll doesn’t help if it’s sitting on the DL the whole season.

MLB Cost Index for Mon May 22 2006

Not much change in the MLB Cost Index this week as the Angels and Cubs remain the most hopeless teams in the league with bloated payrolls and lack of wins. Say what you want about the Yankees and their $200M payroll but they will most likely be right in the thick of things in Sept. We’re not so sure we can say the same about the Cubs.
