Detroit is trying too hard

You know the guy at the bar who is obviously trying too hard? Well, that’s Detroit. The Detroit SB XL Host Committee commissioned a panel of local experts to list the top 40 moments in Detroit sports history. Hey, look, we’re not just about Palace brawls, the Tigers, and Matt Millen! We’ve got 40, count ’em, 40 (!) great moments.

I don’t know. When you have to list Lions’ 12-4 season in 1991, when they didn’t even make the Super Bowl, that’s pressing.

One reply on “Detroit is trying too hard”

Some of my favorites from the list — “Tiger Stadium closes”.  Not “Comerica Park opens”, but the CLOSING of a stadium.

“Lions’ 12-4 season in 1991.”  I wonder if one day Indianapolis’ greatest sports memories will include “Colts’ 14-2 season in 2005?”

“Billy Sims plays his first game as a Lion.”  Just the first game???  Did something extraordinary happen in that one game?  Or did he just play ONE FUCKING GAME?

“Ohio State’s Jesse Owens sets three world records, ties a fourth in just under one hour at Big Ten track championships in Ann Arbor.”  Are you kidding?  An OHIO STATE accomplishment is one of the greatest Michigan events of all time, just because it happened in Ann Arbor?  I guess the Red Sox winning the 2004 World Series was one of the greatest sports moments of the city of St. Louis, then.

Wow.
