Odds and Ends for Wed April 12 2006: Joakim Noah is already rich

Here’s an interesting article from Sports Law Blog about why Joakim Noah can afford to pass up a chance to be a lottery pick in the NBA draft to play one more year in college. His father is a rock star in France (which apparently is quite lucrative) so Joakim doesn’t feel the pressure to support his whole family or help them get out of the ghetto.

Despite Charles Barkley’s quote (“I hope a lot of these young kids look at [Dwayne Wade], who went to college. Everybody is in such a hurry. Hey, the money is not going anywhere… and if you go to the right college, you can get paid there… Alabama, Georgia, South Carolina, Tennessee.”), it’s hard to resist the guaranteed multimillions if you grew up in the projects. College is fun, but so is getting paid.

Jay Williams might try to comeback with the Knicks

Comeback?

Jay Williams was the original Kellen Winslow Jr. Except that Kellen is a dick and, by all accounts, Jay is a classy guy. So we’re happy to learn that his rehab is going well and that he might be with the Knicks next year. (Although I guess being a Knick isn’t exactly wishing well on anyone.)

The Knicks desperately need a point guard since Stephon Marbury is probably on his way out and none of the other guards on the current roster are pure point guards. We don’t know how they’re going to fix Team Titanic, but a healthy (and cheap) Jay Williams is a good first step.

If Jay Williams somehow completes his comeback and gets a big contract in the future, he should repay the Bulls for buying out his contract following his motorcycle accident when they didn’t have to and donate a big sum to a Bulls charity.

Miami Heat Dancers win NBA Dance Team Bracket

We’re big fans

As if there was any doubt. In a dominating performance, the Miami Heat Dance team knocked out the Sacramento Kings Dance Team 77% to 23%.

Frankly, we had a hard time understanding how the Kings Dance Team even made it that far. In order to get through the western conference, they had to beat the Lakers, Clippers, Suns and Sonics. How do you get though 2 LA teams? Like Mikey from Swingers said, “The hottest one percent from around the world migrate to this gene pool.”

But enough about the losers, we would like to raise a glass to the Miami girls, who frankly shouldn’t be allowed to be in future NBA Dance Team tournaments. It’s not fair to the rest of the teams. Just look at their photo galleries.

Shaq gets 2nd career triple double

Lucious Shackleford

See, we knew Shaq was lazy. He only got his second triple double of his career last night (15 points, 11 rebounds, 10 assists).

I’ve been a very unselfish player. I knew they were going to double, so I just wanted to keep my guys involved. I learned a long time ago that if I can keep my other guys involved, it’ll be an easier game for me. I just kept making the good pass and my teammates were making me look good.

His only other one was in 1993, when Whitney Houston had the #1 song and Sam Malone still had hair on Cheers. It’s almost a given that Shaq would have a double double every night but we’d think he’d have more triple doubles with blocked shots.

Meanwhile, Oscar Robertson averaged a triple-double in the first five years of his career.

Carmen Electra is the new Woman We Love

So many great Carmen Electra pics out there and so few that we can actually use on SC. For example, this photo is completely PG yet is the most X rated pic we’ve ever seen.

Carmen is actually one of those people who are famous for being famous… but who cares? She’s just smoking hot. I think she was on Baywatch and has made a few movies or something but mostly we know her from just being on Howard Stern and looking good in public.

We’ll even forgive her for her misguided early music career (girl rap group?), especially since she’s teaching women all over how to strip their way to fitness.

Good choice, Sportscolumn readers, good choice.

NHL Power Rankings Roundup Apr 11 2006

Once again, ESPN has neglected to update their Power Rankings this week. We know they cover the NHL less than they do the WNBA but 2 weeks in a row is ridiculous. Meanwhile, the top 10 on most sites remain relatively stable with only the Devils making a move in the Sportsline and Yahoo rankings. The Devils are one of the hottest teams in the league and still can’t get any love.

Here are the NHL Power Rankings by top sites this week.

Why couldn’t this have happened to Stu Scott?

Damn you rednecks!

Via Fark comes this great story about Brett Haber, a commentator for OLN’s coverage of Professional Bull Riders circuit, who didn’t know his microphone was still on during a commercial break. His remark, “Nod your head you fucking hillbilly. You’re not going to ride anyway” was broadcast to all the in-arena monitors.

Of course, OLN immediately fired him. However, Haber might still collect on the remainder of his $200,000 contract or he could sue OLN because OLN employees failed to turn off the audio feed.

By the way, has anyone see Danielle Sargeant on ESPNews recently?

Odds and Ends for Tues Apr 11 2006: More Favre bashing

We’ve done enough Favre bashing over here at SC so we’ll let The Hater Nation do it for us today.

The football world was stunned when Barry Sanders walked away from the all-time rushing record; one good season away from being the all-time leader. It’s also astonishing that Brett Favre would consider an early retirement while he is within a whisker of obtaining a record that would be the hallmark of his career–the all-time interception mark.

In other news…

[Random site]: Jenna Jameson plays whack a mole for Adidas. (video)

[ESPN]: Chuck Klosterman, one of the very very few columnists on ESPN that are readable, weighs in on Barry Bonds surpassing Babe Ruth.

[Fox Sports]: Batman is invited to throw out out the first pitch in Pittsburgh and takes the opportunity to rip management.

[Buzz Patrol]: $1000 Mint Juleps will be served at the Kentucky Derby to raise money for charity. Drink will be served with a hooker in a gold cup and silver straw.

[Houston Chronicle]: Yao Ming out for rest of season with broken foot. Other Houston players out for rest of season with no skills.
