Sep 20 in Sports History: Billie Jean King defeats Bobby Riggs

In 1973: In a tennis exhibition match at Houston’s Astrodome, Billie Jean King defeated Bobby Riggs in straight sets. Many viewed it as a milestone in women’s sports, despite King being the top-ranked women’s player and Riggs being 55 years old. Riggs defeated Margaret Court, another highly ranked player, earlier in the year.

In 1927: Babe Ruth of the Yankees hit his 60th homerun of the season. The Babe broke his own record of 59, set in 1921. His record would stand until 1961, when Roger Maris hit 61. Maris’s benchmark stood until the late 1990s, when several players eclipsed 61 numerous times.

In 1987: In a game against the Giants, Walter Payton of the Chicago Bears broke Jim Brown’s record with his 107th career rushing touchdown. “Sweetness” broke the record in 12 years and retired following the 1987 season. Emmitt Smith of the Cowboys now holds the record with 164. Payton was inducted into the Hall of Fame in 1993 and sadly died in 1999.

Odds and Ends: Chris Pronger is sick of the rumors

Chris Pronger DID NOT nail her

Chris Pronger told the Edmonton Journal that he knew his demand to be traded wouldn’t go over well with Oilers fans but he is tired of all the rumors and speculation about his private life and what lead to his request to be traded.

I’ve heard all the nasty stuff, about all my girlfriends…that I’ve got more kids than I started with. I must have six kids out there.

It started off with I slept with so-and-so, and I’m having kids, then it moved to my wife sleeping with some of my teammates. I was supposed to be having a kid with a reporter, then she said, ‘I don’t know what they’re talking about.’ Then it went from story to story.

For the record, Pronger denies the rumors about any of the Christys he is supposed to have gotten pregnant.

Tidbits From The Tailgate: Kudos to Lloyd Carr

Well deserved

1.  Welcome Back
Congratulations to Michigan for returning to relevancy as a football program.  After last year’s sputters nearly every pundit had written them off.  They came out and took it to Notre Dame from the very beginning.  Everybody watching on TV was in awe of what was happening as the score read 34-7 midway through the second quarter.  Not only did Michigan become Michigan but they did it at the expense of ending rival Notre Dame’s national title hopes and Brady Quinn’s Heisman Dreams.

2.  Can We Cut In
To the TCU Horned Frogs who vanquished Texas Tech on Saturday.  TCU stands an excellent chance of running the table.  They can play with anybody in America as evidenced by their 3-0 record against the Big 12 over the past two years (wins are over Oklahoma, Baylor, and Texas Tech).  Gary Patterson is easily the most underrated coach in America and this might be the best team he’s ever had.  My personal hope is that TCU and Texas get matched up in the Fiesta Bowl.

3.  If It’s Not Going To Work………Why Have It
The instant replay crew at Oregon should be suspended for the remainder of the regular season.  Their ineptitude heavily contributed to Oklahoma’s defeat in that game.  It also gave the Big 12 a kick in the balls on top of what already was a rough Saturday for the once-powerful conference.

4.  Who’s #2
Both Auburn and USC staked their case on Saturday.  My personal belief is that Auburn is the best team in the country so I would have them installed at the #2 spot.  That being said, USC is one 56 point whupping of a Cal or Oregon to stating their case as the #2 team in America.

5.  Is that you…
The much-maligned Chris Leak has rediscovered some flair as he led the Florida Gators to a huge win over Tennessee on Friday night.  I think Florida’s schedule will still prevent them from winning the SEC, but the win over the Volunteers was huge feather in the cap of both Leak and Urban Meyer.

Bob Stoops says take your apology and shove it

The Pac-10 has suspended the officials who worked the Oklahoma-Oregon game for one game because of their shoddy work.

Errors clearly were made and not corrected, and for that we apologize to the University of Oklahoma, coach Bob Stoops and his players,” Pac-10 Commissioner Tom Hansen said in a statement. “They played an outstanding college football game, as did Oregon, and it is regrettable that the outcome of the contest was affected by the officiating.

Bob Stoops said that the apology offered no consolation.

At least they have reacted to it and tried. Truly there can be no amends to it and it can’t be corrected. I’ve made a million mistakes,” Stoops said. “I’ll make a million more in each game, and in that game included, I wish there were things I could have done differently or changed. Unlike officials, players and coaches don’t have that opportunity. They had an opportunity to get it right and they chose not to. So I find it still absolutely inexcusable and unacceptable.

Bob Stoops and Oklahoma have every right to be pissed. The calls that went against Oklahoma were criminal. The president of the University of Oklahoma sent a letter to Big 12 Commission Kevin Weiberg asking for the game to be stricken from the record and the officials suspended for the rest of the season. One game isn’t nearly good enough but at least the conference admitted their mistake and suspended the officials for one game. Now if only we could get the NFL to fix their officiating.

The Full Count: Mets clinch the NL East

2006 NL East Champs

1. We are the Champions: The first playoff spot in baseball has been clinched. Not surprisingly, it went to the New York Mets. The Mets had had a magic number of 1 for four straight days until they finally won against the Marlins yesterday. The win clinched the division title for them, and officially ended the Braves’ streak of 14 straight division titles. Steve Trachsel pitched shutout ball for six-plus innings to improve to 15-7, and Jose Valentine homered twice in their 4-0 win. At 91-58, New York has the best record in baseball, and they’ve been the only team in the league to score more than 750 runs and allow less than 700. And they’ve done all this with their highest-paid player, Pedro Martinez, on the DL for most of the year.

2. Game of the Year: Possibly the best game of the season played out yesterday between the Padres and the Dodgers. Los Angeles, who was down a half game in the division to the Padres, retook the lead with a 10 inning, 11-10 win that featured a crazy back-and-forth scoring battle. Going into the ninth inning, the Padres were up 6-5, and they padded their lead with three runs. But the Dodgers did something that no team had done since 1964. They hit four straight homeruns in the bottom of the ninth–an incredible rally that tied the game up. No team had hit four in a row in any inning during the last forty years, but the Dodgers did it in the ninth to tie the game at 9-9. But Josh Bard hit a single in the 10th that drove in a run for the Padres. Then Nomar Garciaparra responded with a big-time, two-run homerun that won the game for Los Angeles and finally ended the 3 hour, 53 minute game. This was the final game of the season series for these two clubs, and they sure ended it well.

3. Different Directions: The season’s final battle between the Tigers and White Sox is underway. These two teams were once thought to be the best in the MLB; now they rank 3rd and 6th in terms of record respectively. The Tigers were able to win yesterday, putting them six games above the White Sox in the division. The ChiSox have now lost four in a row and likely won’t make up the ground necessary for a playoff spot. Meanwhile, the 90-60 Tigers are still leading the division, 1.5 games above the Twins (who didn’t play yesterday). Detroit won 8-2 after another great start from Kenny Rogers, who allowed no earned runs for his fourth time in his last eight starts. Magglio Ordonez led the charge offensively with two solo homeruns, and Craig Monroe hit a three-run jack in the ninth to seal the deal. It appears the Tigers will be on their way to their first playoff spot in years, and they’ve already clinched a winning season.

4. Scoring is easy: Just ask the Rockies, who put up a rare 20-run effort against the Giants yesterday. They scored in each of the first six innings, and in seven of the eight in which they batted. Underrated Garrett Atkins had a career day with a 4-5, 6 RBI performance. Atkins has gone almost unnoticed despite the .324, 110-RBI season he is having. Also, .332-hitting Matt Holliday went 3-4 and drove in three runs himself. Todd Helton put up two hits, runs and RBIs. But the greatest Rockie on the day was outfielder Jeff Baker, who was called up from the minors a couple weeks ago. Baker had two homeruns, three runs, and drove in six on the day. Colorado’s offensive machine was reminiscent of the old days at Coors Field, when there was a double-digit scoring effort almost every other night. A game like this hadn’t happened this year. By the way, the once-soaring Giants are now back down to earth and back under .500.

5. More popular than ever: Have you been to a minor-league baseball game lately? If not, than you can consider yourself in the minority. Minor league baseball drew a record 41 million fans this season, breaking the record for the third year in a row. Many leagues such as the Pacific Coast league, the Texas League, and the South Atlantic league set individual record to help the cause.

Sep 19 in Sports History: Better Times for the Cubs and Mariners

2001 AL MVP

In 1906 and in 2001: The Chicago Cubs and Seattle Mariners, who are tied for the ML record for wins in a season, both clinched on the same day. The Cubs were the earliest team to ever clinch a pennant and the Mariners led the AL West Division wire to wire (the Detroit Tigers were the last to do it, and they also clinched their division on this day in 1984. While both franchises won 116 regular season games, each failed to win the World Series.

In 1994: Stan Humphries and Tony Martin of the San Diego Chargers hooked up for an NFL record-tying 99 yard touchdown reception in a win over the Seattle Seahawks. Also, in 2005, Ladanian Tomlinson of the Chargers broke the NFL record by scoring a touchdown in 18 consecutive games.

In 1968: The day after the Cardinals were no-hit by Gaylord Perry of the Giants, St. Louis pitcher Ray Washburn returned the favor and tossed a 2-0 no-hitter against San Francisco. It was the only time in baseball history there were no-hitters in consecutive games in the same park.

Odds and Ends: Five Duquesne basketball players shot

Five Duquesne basketball players were shot in an altercation on campus after a dance. According to a statement released by the school two were treated and released while three are still in the hospital. According to Shawn James, who was shot in the foot, the incident involved a woman who liked someone on the basketball team.

It wasn’t an argument,” James said. “We were just coming from a party. This girl that everybody keeps talking about was just a female who liked someone on the basketball team. She was just casually talking to him.

Her boyfriend called her over and they were arguing,” James said as he gave his first-person account. “Then the guy started saying stuff to us. It was our whole team. We told him we had no time for this and as soon as we turned away, two guys started shooting.

The police are still looking for the gunmen.

Pete Rose will do anything for money

from baseball-almanac.com

Just like the Black Eyed Peas, Pete Rose will absolutely do anything for money. His latest shameless exploitation of baseball are a bunch of autographed baseballs that have the inscription “I’m sorry I bet on baseball – Pete Rose”.

The balls will be sold by Robert Edwards Auctions at $1000 each. We wonder what Rose is getting for signing 30 balls. But we also have to wonder who are these collectors who are buying up this stuff. If there is no demand for such cheap merchandise then Pete wouldn’t get a dime.

Let’s stop the insanity people. Next thing you know, OJ will be signing footballs with “I’m sorry I killed those people”.

Maurice Clarett is going to jail

Will Ice Cube play Clarett in the TV movie?

Well folks, the sad tale of Maurice Clarett has reached the final chapter. Sure he could turn his life around in jail but he’s just going to be another high profile athlete that wasted his potential on laziness and greed. Maurice Clarett has agreed to a plea bargain in two criminal cases and was sentenced to 7 1/2 years in jail. He will be available for parole in 3 1/2 years.

Clarett got 3 years for the aggravated robbery, 3 years for using a gun in the crime, and 1/2 years for carrying a concealed weapon.

Clarett is 22 now so if he spends his entire 3 1/2 years working out, he could be in better shape than he’s ever been by the time he’s 26. And then all the talking heads will talk about how he’s a young 26 because he’s a RB without that many miles on him. Or more likely, he’ll just fade from our conciousness and discover God.
