Dec 19 in Sports History: Gretzky’s youngest to 1000 goals

In 1984: Wayne Gretzky, in a victory over the Los Angeles Kings, became the fastest player ever (23 years old) to reach 1,000 points in his career. Gretzky did it in only 424 games, which beat the former fastest Guy Lafleur by over 300 games. Gretzky would score his 400th goal a month later, also making him the fastest to 400 goals. To put Gretzky’s 1,000 points into perspective: The Great One reached 1,000 in only his sixth season. Mark Messier needed 12 years to reach 1,000, Ronnie Francis took 13, and Gordie Howe had to wait 14 years to reach the milestone. They are the three players behind Gretzky on the all-time scoring leader’s list. Today’s current leader, Sidney Crosby of the Penguins, better step it up quick if he wants to break Gretzky’s record. Sid the Kid would need to average 179 points a year, but nobody has scored that many since 1989.

In 1999: Offensive lineman Orlando Brown of the Cleveland Browns suffered a career-threatening eye injury in a game against Jacksonville. Was it an accidental poke suffered in the trenches from a Jaguar’s defender? No, it was a careless toss of the flag by a foolish NFL referee. While flagging Brown for holding, official Jeff Triplette needlessly Elwayed his flag – which was weighted with bb’s for some reason — and struck Brown in the right eye. Brown reacted angrily and shoved Triplette to the ground. He was ejected and suspended indefinitely by the NFL. He returned to play for the Baltimore Ravens in 2003 and eventually received a multi-million dollar settlement from the NHL. Triplette was never disciplined for the incident.

Odds and Ends: Chris Pronger is sick of the rumors

Chris Pronger DID NOT nail her

Chris Pronger told the Edmonton Journal that he knew his demand to be traded wouldn’t go over well with Oilers fans but he is tired of all the rumors and speculation about his private life and what lead to his request to be traded.

I’ve heard all the nasty stuff, about all my girlfriends…that I’ve got more kids than I started with. I must have six kids out there.

It started off with I slept with so-and-so, and I’m having kids, then it moved to my wife sleeping with some of my teammates. I was supposed to be having a kid with a reporter, then she said, ‘I don’t know what they’re talking about.’ Then it went from story to story.

For the record, Pronger denies the rumors about any of the Christys he is supposed to have gotten pregnant.

Odds and Ends (06.30.06): More on the Chris Pronger rumor

Yesterday, we reported on the rumor behind Chris Pronger’s trade request was because his wife was upset he got a local television reporter pregnant. Well, the rumor probably isn’t true and Christie Chorley, the alleged baby momma in the rumor has issued this statement on her website.

JUNE 29, 2006

I would appreciate your help in putting an end to my name being linked to this situation, as it is completely WITHOUT ANY MERIT OR FACTUAL BASIS.

Any further slander or defamation can and will result in swift legal action.

From the ALL CAPS, you can tell Christie is VERY UPSET ABOUT THIS. But still, is a speculative rumor really grounds for a slander or defamation lawsuit?

Of course he’s a soccer fan!

Did Chris Pronger get a female reporter pregnant?

NOT Mrs. Pronger

Remember that rumor a couple of months ago that the reason behind all the talk about the Red Sox trading Manny Ramirez was because he cheated on his wife and she wanted them out of Boston? Well, via Deadspin, comes this rumor that Chris Pronger’s wife wants them out of Edmonton because he got a local television reporter named Christie Chorley pregnant.

Well, the reason Pronger’s wife wants to leave Edmonton is not b/c she hates the city or the people. Apparently Pronger got a female beat reporter who covers the oilers pregnant. Christy Chorley is her name, and she told Prongs half way through the season. This is why it would be difficult for the Pronger family to settle down in Edmonton.

If this is true, another athlete, another absentee father. We all know about Shawn Kemp but this is the first we’ve heard about it in the NHL. Well besides the rumor that Bobby Clarke is Ed Snider’s illegitimate son.

You call that a hockey riot, Edmonton?

After the Oilers won the Western Conference on Saturday, 30,000 to 50,000 fans gathered on Whyte Avenue to celebrate the ol’ fashioned way. Forget shots on goal and penalty minutes, here are the important stats of the night.

15: people arrested

9: fires set with garbage, pallets, etc.

2: phone booths uprooted and destroyed

2: lights ripped apart atop a 30-foot tall light standard

1: man who urinated in crowd

1: man who fell from a guy wire

1: woman who broke her ankle

Only 15 people arrested, 9 fires set, and 1 urination? Are you kidding me? In Detroit, they set people on fire and then urinate on them to put it out. You’ve got a long way to go, Oilers fans. Perhaps you want to study this instructional video from soccer hooligans, the kings of rioting.

It just might be a warmup for the Stanley Cup so we’ll cut em some slack here. It seems the Edmonton police need some practice too.

Police kept their distance. One officer, leaning on his bicycle and watching the edge of the crowd, said he and his colleagues would be crazy to wade in. It’s not worth it. We don’t want to die.

Good luck in the Final Round, Edmonton.
